Zitrone Dietikon. To arrange. A concrete place, an abstract word. The concrete place, a community of people organizing interim usage around Zürich, low budget, ad-hoc, self organized. The abstract word, yearns for the observation of its concrete form, the arrangement. A coming to agreement or understanding as put by definition of the word or in a certain sense, the idea of a manifold that makes up a constellation with such intrinsic richness that makes the manifold a whole. Constellations are to be uncovered.

The project deals with the mechanics of the interim usage as a spatial configuration and aims to bring the qualities of the interim usage to common places in parts of cities with a notable lack of. By that, interventions with manifold qualities are proposed to be built and placed, used and played by the community, for the community.

Collecting

The format of Still Life images by Wolfgang Tillmans are the starting point of the data collection. The place of Zitrone Dietikon is approached with the immediate act of observing and discovering “Still Life constellations”.

Constellations of such kind can be found all around the site of Zitrone Dietikon, showing the degree of commitment of the members to engage with and appropriate these spaces. A first collection is a set of close up images of various arrangements.

A first collection, of an infinitely expandable inventory of things. With the help of the law of Prägnanz, mutually complementary formats have been collected in order to portray a more holistic understanding of the situation at the Zitrone. The Still Life image as a subjective format is complemented by the objective format of 3D scans. Further, the various spatial settings are covered by a documentary central perspective imagery.

We append the collection with semantics. The semantics are in this instance the complementary to images. Thereby, anecdotical stories of things happening at the site are recorded. Additionally, these activities are transcribed into more abstract performative verbs.

In its totality, these different formats form a comprehensive collection about the Zitrone.

The Zitrone is an island of engagement and an enclosure of interaction surrounded by the sea of a lack of. This specific tendency becomes especially apparent whilst looking at the vast amount of surface area covered as empty lawns.

We view these spaces as a fitting setup for what we have encountered at the Zitrone and to consequently implement a strategy to make up meaningful social spaces of interactive and productive potential. Coming in various shapes and sizes, and also, contextually different from one another, these lawn spaces offer a variety of voids, of potentialities.

The abundance of the Verein Zitrone is one specific mode of social interaction which can be described as a collective gathering of a very much closely tied community. Thus, other exemplary social institutions were taken into account. By looking at the entity of a Communal Center, the collection of the collective at Zitrone is appended by the character of communal leisure.

By looking at the entity of the communal planting Dunkelhölzli by means of the before introduced methodics, the collection is appended by the character of communal productivity. The content of the entire collection is thus a compilation of the content of the Zitrone, the Communal center and the Pflanzverein.

By that, we aim to establish a stable set of data points that we want to make use of to holistically intervene in the lawn spaces.

Arranging

Drawing from the diverse pool of references that encapsulate the conditions of the three entities, arrangement stripes of manifold formats are produced. These stripes inform a potentiality of meaningful constellations. Constellations bring together the different formats, which mutually enrich and benefit from each other.

From the arrangement of stripes, spatialities are being generated. Interventions in the void. The interventions are, as derived from the arrangement stripe, highly specific towards the set of references. They create specific yet multipliable situations. These spatial arrangements can be made easily and quickly, they are either durable or demountable, repeatable and combinable. An infinitive amount of configurations is possible, over time.
