“Music and architecture are counter-designs, essentially alien to one another, but as opposites they can be metaphorically related to one another. Music is an irreversible process, architecture an immovable form. Architecture encloses a room, music fills a room. Music is essentially placeless, architecture defines its place. Architecture is to enter, it is a constant. Music is to comprehend, it is fleeting. Music takes place as an immaterial body in instant form, architecture places a fixed spatial structure in time and in space.“
Wolfgang Rihm‘s view of the relationship between music and architecture essentially outlines the main questions with which this project is concerned. What is the creative relationship between music and space in the context of the contemporary? To what extent is a domain leap between the two forms of expression possible?
The project brings forward the new terminology of musical space. The term indicates the equal emphasis put on both music and architecture, rather than speaking of spaces for music, or music for space.
The project was exhibited as part of the showcase of the Chair of Digital Architectonics at HIB Open Space, ETH Zurich.
